The Old Police Headquarters

THE FIND

The Police Headquarters in Port of Spain was built in 1876 in an Italian-Gothic style with limestone from the Piccadilly Quarries. Large arched galleries on two storeys and a tall clock tower give the structure a luring appearance. The structure was formerly home of the force's commanding officer, but it was destroyed by fire in 1882. By 1884, it had been reconstructed with concrete floors, iron stairs, and a roof that could withstand fire. During the 1990 coup attempt, it was destroyed by fire once more. In 2001, the restoration project was finished.Senior police officer offices, the headquarters for the Central Police Station and C.I.D. in Port of Spain, and the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service Museum are currently housed in the structure.
