THE FIND
Our Lady of Montserrat R.C. church, built in 1872, is a property of interest located on a parcel of land situated in Tortuga, on a high ridge of Trinidad's Central Range, overlooking the Gulf of Paria. It features a 200-year-old wooden icon of Our Lady of Montserrat that Capuchin missionaries brought to the Mission, which came before the Church, in the middle of the 1800s. The interior of the structure is decorated with twenty (20) exquisite stained-glass windows, fourteen (14) Stations of the Cross, and original artworks. These windows, which include biblical subjects, came from Henri Louis Victor Gesta's workshop. They were created between 1880 and 1890 in Toulouse, France. The Litany of Tortuga Saints (Imprimatur 1954), which also has statues of saints, is part of the Shrine's spiritual, historical, and cultural legacy.
