Nariva Swamp and Bush Bush Wildlife Sanctuary

THE FIND

The Nariva Swamp is Trinidad and Tobago's largest freshwater wetland, measuring more than 60 square kilometers. The swamp, which has been designated a Wetland of International Importance, is home to 58 different mammal species, including the West Indian Manatee, Red Howler monkeys, caimans, anacondas, boa constrictors, white-fronted capuchin monkeys, numerous species of parrots, including both the blue-and-gold macaw and red-bellied macaws, as well as many wetland and savanna birds. The 1,408 hectares (3,480 acres) Bush Bush part of the Nariva Swamp was designated as a wildlife sanctuary in 1968 and as a banned area in 1989. Listed opening hours: Based on appointments.
