Devil's Woodyard

THE FIND

The Devil’s Wood Yard Mud Volcano is in a small village called Hindustan in Princes Town, South Trinidad. It was given its name in 1852 by the Amerindian tribes after it first erupted. It is believed that the eruption shook the entire village, toppling majestic trees and frightening the villagers. Residents believed then that the devil had come from beneath the earth and the mud volcano was treated as an entrance to the underworld. In June 1993, the area was publicly opened as a recreational park. Local and international geologists have visited Devil’s Woodyard over the years as eruptions have brought to the surface several valuable fossils and ancient rock, some of which are over 65 million years old.
