At the foot of Frederick Street in the middle of Independence Square stands a statue of Captain Arthur Andrew Cipriani. On April 17, 1959, at Port of Spain, Dr. Eric Williams erected a monument honoring Cipriani and said, "Captain Cipriani is the pioneer of the nationalist movement of Trinidad and Tobago." We honor the aspirations of our indigenous peoples, our own historical growth, our own constructive activity, and our own native history created by native hands with the installation of this statue.
